Martin van Meytens (Stockholm 1695 - 1770 Vienna), workshop of
Portrait of Field Marshal Leopold Joseph Count Daun (Vienna 1705 - 1766) with the neck chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, oil on canvas, 95 x 74 cm, framed, (Wo)
Provenance: private property, North Germany
Originally Daun was destined to become a clergyman, but was eventually allowed to follow his inclination and become a soldier. He successfully participated in several wars of Emperor Charles VI and in 1639 was appointed field marshal. Having fought for Maria Theresa’s inheritance, the monarch entrusted him with the reorganisation of the imperial army. This new army first proved successful in the Seven-Year War, when Daun defeated the Prussian King Frederick the Great, who was thought to be invincible, for the first time. It was on that occasion that Maria Theresa founded the Military Maria Theresa Order, and Daun was the first to receive its large cross. In 1760 he was appointed state minister by Maria Theresa. After his death, the empress wrote: “The Lord took away from me those two persons I had been trusting completely - Haugwitz and Daun.”
