Jean-Baptiste Perroneau (Paris 1715 - 1783 Amsterdam), circle of
Portrait of a knight of the Holy Spirit (Chevalier du Saint Esprit), oil on canvas, 97.5 x 74.5 cm, framed, (Wo)
Although Perroneau, a student of Hubert Drouais, had been a full member of the Paris Academy since 1753, his rival La Tour, who was equal to him in terms of artistic achievement, enjoyed greater popularity among Parisian connoisseurs. At that time the diagnosis of “nervous disorders” had almost become fashionable, and the latter’s style was thus more in demand than that of Perroneau, whose sitters showed lively and healthy complexions. His commissioners came from London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and other towns. Today his works are preserved at the Louvre, the National Gallery, the Rijksmuseum, and many other important museums.
