The present painting is considered an autograph work by Titian by the following experts: Prof. Suida, Zampetti, Ost, and Pedrocco (Museums Ca Rezzonico and Correr, Venice).
Provenance: Arnold Seligman-Ray, New York; Paul M. Byk, New York; Robert W. Neugebauer, Saint John, Canada; Gisela Geuer, Bad Sinzig, Germany; North-German private collection; private collection, Tokyo. The old stretcher bears an original label from the work’s time in America, with a certificate by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Suida: “Titian. Portrait of a Procurator of St. Mark, Certificated by Dr. W. Suida”.
Certificate: Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Suida, New York, 24 November 1942: “I am persuaded that the … portrait of a Procurator of St. Mark (Venice) … is an authentic work by Titian. There are only a few portraits of dignitaries of the Venetian Republic left which are painted by the hand of this famous artist… The authorship of Titian is emphasised by the unmistakable noble tranquillity of the details as well as their reproduction… I reserve all rights for further investigations regarding the possible identification of the represented personality. I also intend to include this portrait in the next issue of my book about Titian.” (as a photocopy) Prof. Pietro Zampetti, 22 February 1967: “Ho letto lo studio che a tale dipinto ha dedicato l’illustre critico W. Suida con valide ragioni lo ritiene opera di Tiziano e mette in risalto le eccellenti qualità. Anche l’esame del trasparente a colori mi convince nel ritenere valida l’attribuzione del Suida, con la quale quindi concordo …” (in fotocopia/as a photocopy). Pietro Zampetti agrees with the “renowned art critic” Wilhelm Suida as well. Dott. Filippo Pedrocco, Musei di Cà Rezzonico e Correr a Venezia, autore della monografia di Tiziano (Hirmer Verlag, Munich / Monaco di Baviera, 2000, translated into five languages / tradotta in cinque lingue) ha esaminato il dipinto in originale il 23 luglio 2008 a Vienna e lo confermava opera autografa di Tiziano / examined the original work and identified it as an autograph Titian.
Literature: Univ. Prof. Dr. Hans Ost, Cologne University, Sonderdruck aus dem Wallraf-Richartz Jahrbuch, vol. III, 1991, Dumont Buchverlag, Cologne (stampa speciale dell’annuario del Wallraf-Richartz Museo di Colognia, vol. III, 1991). Prof. Ost considers the present composition as an autograph work by Titian and has identified it as the portrait of the Procurator of San Marco and General Inspector of the Venetian Fleet, Alessandro Contarini.
