Bernardo Strozzi (Genoa 1582 - 1644 Venice)
Saint Simon, oil on canvas, 62 x 42 cm, framed, (Wo)
Bernardo Strozzi was forced to leave his native town, settling in Venice around 1630. There he developed a personal style influenced by Rubens and Veronese. The present picture may well be assigned to that period, so that 1630/31 can be suggested as its date of execution. This is underlined by the intense colours and the tangible definition of the figure, which are typical of that period. There is no known replica of the present composition, although the artist repeatedly dealt with the subject of the apostles.
We are greatful to Prof. Mina Gregori for confiming the attribution.
