Bartolomeo Bimbi (Settignano, Florence 1648 - 1729 Florence) and workshop
Two still lifes with pears representing the months July and August, oil on canvas, 100 x 125 cm, framed, (2), (Wo)
These two compositions are typical examples of Bimbi’s still lifes of fruit, for which he was held in high esteem at the Medici court. His patron was Cosimo III de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Originally, these two works formed part of a series of four compositions - the two other paintings representing September/October and winter respectively. The fruits, observed with almost scientific accuracy, can be assigned to the different seasons. The painted lists in the present works mention the names of those varieties of fruit maturing in July and August. The compositions of our paintings are based on a famous work in the Villa Medicea in Poggio a Caiano. It was likewise commissioned by Cosimo III and represents various varieties of pears growing ripe at different times of the year.
