Jacopo del Sellaio (Florence 1442 - 1493)
The Virgin and Child, oil on panel, 74 x 44 cm, original old frame, (Wo)
The present composition by the Florentine master Jacopo del Sellaio shows stylistic borrowings from Botticelli, both as to the cool colours and the delicate chiaroscuro. The elegant pose of the child is reminiscent of works by Pollaiolo, Verrocchio, and Desiderio da Settignano. Our painting may be dated to the artist’s late period., as is suggested by its stylistic closeness to the altarpiece in the church of San Frediano in Castello, executed by Sellaio in 1490-1493.
