Lazarus van der Borcht
(active in Antwerp between 1601 and 1611; free master of the local Guild of St. Luke) Lot and His Daughters, signed and inscribed at lower left LASARUS. VANDER. BUCHT NEDERLENDER, oil on panel, 91 x 81 cm, framed, (Wo)
Lazarus van der Borcht is only little known as an artist, which is due to the fact that - apart from the present composition - we only know one secure work by his hand: Orpheus Surrounded by Animals at Sommerau Castle, in the picture gallery of the Counts of Brunswik, signed and dated “Lazarus van der Borcht anno 1604”. The present painting is the second work by Van der Borcht that has been unearthed. It is closely related to the works of the Haarlem-based painters Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem (1562 - 1638) and Gillis Congnet (c. 1535 - 1599).
