Master/Maestro dei Riflessi, (Venice, 18th century), attributed to
Morning toilette, oil on canvas, 53 x 45 cm, framed, (Wo)
In 1969 the Maestro dei Riflessi was identified by Terisio Pignatti as an artist of the circle closest to Pietro Longhi. As is the case in this painting, many of the works by the Venetian are based on the compositions of Longhi. In this picture the Master takes his lead from a lost work by Longhi, a preparatory drawing for which has been identified and is held in the collection of the Museo Correr in Venice (Inv. No. 475, Pignatti, no. 475), as well as from a mirror-inverted engraving by Charles Joseph Flipart (Pignatti 474). Here, as he often does, he departs in some details from the precedent; the splendid mirror decorated with rocailles in this painting is a creation of the Master of Riflessi.
