Jusepe de Ribera, called / detto lo Spagnoletto
(Jativa 1588/91-1652/56 Napoli / Naples), workshop of / bottega Saint Jerome / San Gerolamo, oil on canvas, 68 x 50 cm, framed, (Wo)
A three-quarter-length portrait of the saint, related to the present head in terms of position and execution, but without the attribute of the skull, is in the Harrach Collection in Rohrau, Lower Austria. It arrived at Count Aloys Thomas Raimund Harrach’s Viennese palace in the first half of the 18th century, together with the famous collection of Neapolitan paintings compiled by the count as Habsburg Vice-King of Naples. The present, high-quality picture, which is shorter in length and painted on Roman canvas dating from the 17th century, was probably executed during the artist’s lifetime and is not a later replica of a detail.
