Achilles and the Daughters of Lycomedes, oil on copper, 57 x 71 cm, framed, (Wo)
His godly mother Thetis was foretold that Achilles would meet his death if he joined the Trojan War. Therefore she dressed him as a girl and hid him amidst the daughters of King Lycomedes. The Greeks learned from an oracle that they would not be able to conquer Troy without Achilles. So they sent Odysseus to find him. The latter played a trick on Achilles. He brought the girls gifts, which included weapons. Achilles immediately picked the weapons and could thus be identified.
