Alpheus and Arethusa, oil on canvas, 135 x 190 cm, framed, (Wo)
Provenance: South-German private collection
The river god Alpheus fell in love with the shy nymph Arethusa when she was bathing in the nude in his waters on a hot day. He followed her until the desperate nymph called Artemis/Diana to her assistance. The virginal goddess turned Arthusa into a spring. Alpheus changed into a river, trying to mingle with the spring. In antiquity people believed that there was an underground connection between the river Alpheus on Peloponnesus and the spring Arethusa on the island of Ortygia off Siracusa in Sicily.
