Frederick headed the Protestant Union. In 1619 he accepted the Bohemian royal crown, having been elected by the Bohemian diet and persuaded by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of the English King James I. But he was no match for the powerful Catholic opponents. After his defeat on the White Mountain near Prague in 1620 he fled to Holland.
