Maratta was a student of Andrea Sacchi and a friend of Bellori, who showed him the way to the rediscovery of the grand and classical Cinquecento, which he then translated into the Seicento, remote from the painterly extravagances of the Baroque. His work is marked by an idealised elegance and was very successful in his days.
