Vittore Ghislandi called frà Galgario (Bergamo 1655 - 1743)
Portrait of a knight of the Order of Malta oil on canvas, 134 x 101 cm, framed, (Wo)
Provenance: North-German private collection
Frà Galgario was probably the most important portraitist of the Italian settecento. He was a student of Sebastiano Bombelli in Venice and executed an unforgettable gallery of likenesses of famous European personalities. In each of his portraits, brilliant and subtle colours are combined with a liberal handling of the brush; over the years the intensity of his colours increased to such an extent that they seem to burst the outlines of his motifs. His anonymous portraits are genuine still lifes of the human face in which he achieves the highest degree of painterly expression.
The painting has been offered on the 31 May 2000 at Finarte, Milan (lot 56) for € 90.000 – 100.000.
Correction: The Order presented in our picture is not an Order of Malta.
