Achenbach also succeeded in satisfying the Italian yearnings of his contemporaries with this motif. He created scenery which was equally romantic and picturesque and which he illuminated dramatically. The entry in the lexicon of the Düsseldorf Academy reads as follows: Achenbach’s paintings are characterised by their colouring and the effective staging of light, primarily demonstrated in his many evening and night ambiences with the use of different light sources.
