Eugene Galien-Laloue
(Paris 1854-1941 Cherence) Paris - View of the Place de la Bastille, signed E. Galien Laloue, gouache on thin board, c. 18,5 x 32 cm, framed, (glazed), (Rei)
Eugene Galien-Laloue: His preference was for painting city views and street scenes of Paris during the Belle Epoque. His work is characterised by his precise architectural reproductions of Parisian buildings with virtuosic light effects, which are then reflected in shop windows and stretches of water. Galien-Laloue was very popular during his lifetime and his various exclusive contracts with dealers explains the multiplicity of pseudonyms with which his paintings are signed; these include landscapes in the Barbizon style, as well as town and harbour scenes. He typically livens up his landscapes with small, dynamic figures (see also Saur Lexicon, Vol. 48, Leipzig 2005).
