Giacomo Manzù
(Bergamo 1908-1991) Vescovo seduto, c. 1960, bronze, unique piece, with founder’s mark NFMM, height 47.5 cm, (PP)
With a photo certificate issued by the artist.
Provenance: European private collection
This is one of Manzù’s most typical objects: a centripetal, block-shaped, three-dimensional form, with the surface covering the material, as well as its rigidity and heaviness. Here we encounter the idea of arrested energy, forces reminiscent of Rodin that are expanding in space, while the delicate modelling, the graphic structure of the surface, and the suggested simplifications point to the artist’s preoccupation with Rosso.
