Das österreichische Auktionshaus Dorotheum, Marktführer in Zentraleuropa und ältestes der großen Auktionshäuser der Welt, eröffnete im September 2005 eine unweit der Oper gelegene Repräsentanz in Zagreb. Vlaho Bukovac: His family emigrated to America in 1866, where he began to teach himself to paint and draw. He travelled back to him homeland in 1876 with a view to begin studying in Paris. At the beginning of the 1880s he was living in Belgrade, where he painted for, among others, the royal court. In 1893 he left for Zagreb and became a central figure of the cultural life there, before visiting Vienna for the first time and then on to Prague. Bukovac is one of the most important Croatian painters of the century, an exponent of academic Realism, which he opened up to open-air painting and Symbolism. Apart from Portraits, his favourite medium, he was also a virtuousic painter of nudes, large figural compositions and landscape studies.
