Lot No. 39
DescriptionA figure, male, wood, coloured brown. These figures, called 'Blolo Bian', do not represent 'ancestor spirits' (as noted on an old label under the base of our figure), but rather 'spiritual husbands' who live in 'another world' (in the bush or 'afterlife') and with whom their 'wife' in this world can communicate about problems. An old object in 'classic' Baule style. With good usage patina, finely crafted coiffure with a decorative nail above the forehead, scarification marks and a chain of small glass beads on the left leg. Small areas of age damage. H: 39 cm. (ME)
Prov: According to its consigner, this figure comes from an abandoned, museum collection in Krems, Lower Austria. Lit.: 'Die Kunst des schwarzen Afrika', Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, Ill.: 62, 63; Documentation No. 381-382; and in many other books about African art.
