Catherine Puglisi has confirmed, on the basis of a photograph, that this work was painted in the workshop of Francesco Albani.
The putto is drawn from a famous painting by Francesco Albani, Salmacis Embracing Hermaphroditus, formerly in Vienna, in the ownership of Prince Eugenio of Savoy (1663–1741) and now in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin (see C. Puglisi, Francesco Albani, 1999, cat. n. 120, plate 240, pp. 198–199).
