Descriptionsilver, gilt, cast, chased, stone base, lapis lazuli with marble trim, sculpted in the round, Height: 19 cm, Length: 23 cm, Overall Height: incl. base 27,5 cm, probably Italy, 17th Cent., (Lu)
An exceptional and large vermeil sculpture. Female deities mounted on boars are known from antiquity, for example the Celtic Arduinna, according to the "Interpretatio Romana" associated with the Roman goddess Diana. The above sculpture shows a putto armed with a spear and probably served as a table decoration for hunting dinners. Very few objects of such fine workmanship and heavy weight are known. A museum-quality piece of exceptional rarity.
