Apocalyptic appearances and “Grundmalerei” (ground painting): Today there can hardly be anything else but to demonstrate death and the end of this world, to sign the final signature. The sun turns black, what remains for us else than to fall down, to hide and to wait. A. Rainer 1958

They arose from the need to call up misunderstandings, serving simultaneously to create my own suggestive slogans... A. Rainer 1979 Texts from: Arnulf Rainer “Aller Anfang ist schwer”, Frühe Arbeiten 1949–1961, published by Arnulf Rainer Museum DuMont Verlag, 2009
