Provenance: Austrian nobility. Paintings by Bretschneider, who created primarily still lifes, but was primarily known for his gallery pictures, are preserved in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlunge in Munich and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Literature (on the artist): Dialog mit Alten Meistern, catalogue, Herzog-Anton-Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig 1997, pp. 40-44 and p. 224.
