Lot No. 138
Description (Nijmegen c. 1619-1678 Amsterdam), A sous-bois still life with a snake, a butterfly and mushrooms, oil on canvas, 26.5 x 23 cm, framed,
Provenance: Belgian private collection. Marseus van Schrieck was specialized in still lifes of forest ground featuring reptiles and butterflies. Walther Bernt writes about these works: "The animals are depicted faithfully as the painter used to observe them in his own terrarium. Snakes and frogs lurking for prey lend his still lifes an exciting mysteriousness…" We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, who confirmed the authenticity of the present painting to its consigner.
