DescriptionA large slit drum, carved from a single piece of wood, light brown; hollowed and shaped tree trunk; both ends carved with large buffalo heads. The drums were struck at the narrow 'tongues' at the centre and used in transmitting messages over a distance of up to 20km. An impressive, very old piece formerly owned by the 'Fon' (chief, sultan) of Bandjoun; fine patina with cracks owing to age. L: 220 cm. Ø: 41 cm. (ME)
