A 'soko mutu' monkey mask of unusual 'angular-Cubist' style, from the Hemba, a sub-group of the Luba in East Congo; of wood, dyed black. The top of the head with a hole for protective 'magical substances'. Such masks were not worn or used for dances but displayed in houses as protective amulets. With patina and minor damage owing to age (insect damage?) obverse and reverse. 1st Third 20th Cent. (ME)
