We thank Dr. Maria Silvia Proni for confirming the authenticity of the present work (oral communication).
Giacomo Francesco Cipper was born in Feldkirch, Austria, in 1664, his original name having been Jakob Franz Zipper. In 1969 he married into the family of a Milan-based notary. Because of his origins, he was given the nickname of “Il Todeschini” (“the short German”). His compositions are heavily inspired by Dutch genre painting, and in terms of naturalism they are closely related to the Spanish and Neapolitan schools. His paintings mostly show close-up views of half-length figures - members of the lower classes and marginal groups of society - arranged in scenes from everyday life. They are often depicted in a grotesque, caricature-like style. His paintings frequently contain elements adopted from the genre of still life, rendered with a great sense of realism and detail.
