Provenance: European private collection
In 1621 Rubens received his most important commission - a series of paintings devoted to the life of Maria de Medici and her husband, King Henry IV of France. It comprises 21 paintings, which originally adorned the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris; today they are preserved at the Louvre. Henry IV had enthroned Maria de Medici shortly before he was murdered. However, her son, the future King Louis XIII, claimed his title to the throne soon afterwards. That is why Maria de Medici entrusted Rubens with the cycle in question: she wanted to strengthen her legitimate position as a regent. The painting by Rubens depicts Maria’s marriage by proxy in Florence.
