David de Hooch (Utrecht, mid-17th century), follower of
Fantastic ruined landscape with travellers and a streamlet in the background, oil on canvas, laid down on panel, framed, 45 x 36 cm, (Wo)
Without reserve
David de Hooch, who seems to have been a member of the Utrecht-based family of artists, belonged to a group of local veduta painters that were under the influence of Jan Both’s Italianate landscapes and also dealt with the subject of the ruined capriccio. At least one member of the Hooch family had actually travelled to Italy (Bernt, p. 13). His landscapes feature primarily ruined architectures and rocks that are often accentuated by a diagonal influx of light.
