The monkey seems to be the most important animal in Immendorf’s imagery. Immendorf mentioned repeatedly that the monkey was his other self: a symbol of the ambivalence of the artist’s existence, oscillating between confidence and doubt. The monkey is both foolish and wise and stands for opposites. “The monkey appears sitting on my back, and in front of me there is the picture I’m painting, which is being attacked by the monkey and who is painting something else or painting on me.” In Immendorff’s art the monkey is an intelligent animal. It often sits at the back of his neck, guiding his brush to rouse him so that he will not succumb to routine. Immendorff, Essl Museum, Klosterneuburg, 2008, p. 57
