Please register at the pay office before an auction begins. You will receive your personal bidder’s number, which you will need for bidding.
In case of catalogued auctions, the auctioneer will call out each lot with its number and starting price (initial bid) according to the order of items in the auction catalogue.
In case of uncatalogued auctions, the auctioneer will not call out all of the items on display. Please make known the lot number of the item for which you would like to bid to our attendants at the auction desk. Then the item will be called out for you.
You will find the lot numbers next to the item in question in the showroom.
Participate in the bidding by raising your bidder’s number so that it is clearly visible. Should it be overlooked, simply make yourself heard.
Bidding steps are generally in increments of approximately 10% of the previous bid. The object is knocked down to the person making the highest bid with the words “One, two, sold” and the ringing of a bell.
If an item is not sold at once, we will be pleased to re-offer it for sale while the auction is still going on, or you may acquire it during the post-auction sale.
Our auction team will always be available for you during a sale, should you have any questions.
Inform us in writing at least 24 hours before the sale about the items you are interested in. Most importantly, let us know the telephone number at which we can reach you at the time of the sale. Our employees will inform you in a language chosen by you about what is going on in the saleroom, and they will bid on your behalf according to your instructions. This service is free and offered for items with a minimum starting price of 220 euros.
Send us your Telephone Bid online or via fax: +43 1 515 60 - 508.
You can use the absentee bid form from the catalogue.
If you cannot attend a sale in person, you may place an absentee bid at least 24 hours before the sale. Please indicate the maximum limit up to which you would like to bid. We guarantee that we will also knock down the item to you below your limit, provided no higher bids have been made. In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. Absentee bid forms can be found online, in our auction catalogues, or on our premises.
You can phone in on the subsequent day to learn whether you have succeeded in buying the desired item. Contact the Dorotheum Client Service at +43 1 515 60 – 200.
You will receive an invoice for the item bought by you by post, sent to the address stated in the absentee bid form.
If you want to stay anonymous as a bidder, independent brokers will be pleased to execute bids on your behalf against payment of a minor fee. A broker will attend to you personally, keep a list of the items you desire, and bid for you at auction as your representative.
Brokers are at your disposal at any time before and after the sale.
