The Dorotheum’s coins department covers two and a half thousand years of history. Our offering extends from antique coins (Greek, Celtic, Roman Republic and Imperial, Byzantine, Gothic etc.) to the Middle Ages (Europe with particular focus on Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Germany) and through to the modern age (international, with particular focus on the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Austria, Germany, Bohemia and Moravia, Hungary, Italy) and the present day. Our auctions have featured individual pieces of great value as well as small collections and omnibus volumes. Our coin auctions are held twice yearly and also feature medals and insignia (from the Renaissance through to the 20th century), paper money, historical securities and numismatic literature. Also included are peripheral objects such as coin scales and weights, seals and signets and reworked coins (not jewellery). The Dorotheum’s coin department will also purchase gold coins and medals for their current gold value (market rates). The Dorotheum has held auctions of coins for over 200 years.
