To the Orthodox Church, icons are not illustrations of a worldly nature but rather „windows to heavenly reality“. Icons depicting Christ, the Virgin, the apostles and saints come up for auction. Particular biblical scenes, the lives of saints or typological groupings are reproduced as a Deesis or icons celebrating holy days. The selections include icons from around the world and are offered at the Dorotheum within the framework of our auctions of illustrative varia.
