Two auctions per year are dedicated to statuary at the Dorotheum. Our offerings span outstanding sculptures from the Gothic and Renaissance periods through to Baroque and Classicism and include sculptures of museum quality by famous sculptors such as Johann Meinrad Guggenbichler, Johann Franz Schwanthaler , Hans Multscher, Hans Spindler and Tilman Riemenschneider. The auctioning of one the largest private German collections of sculpture during October 2006, on the theme of the “Changing Image of the Virgin Mary from 1350 to 1900”, was the most important auction of statuary in the Dorotheum’s history. A particularly beautiful gothic St. Christopher from the hands of a Frankish sculptor dated around 1490 was finally sold for 54,000 euros.
