Ornamental centrepiece from London, 1837
The Tercentenary Silver Auction of the Vienna Dorotheum on 29th November 2007 distinguished itself with a sale rate of 80 percent and its high impact on international collectors
The auction's most valuable lots, a number of highly decorative objects of gilt silver, were all knocked down far beyond their estimated prices: Pride of place went to an ornamental centrepiece from London with a glass bowl supported by three graces and dating to 1837 which went to a Russian collector for 36.900 Euro (Cat. No. 96). A lidded box from Paris decorated with a micro-mosaic is likewise going to Russia, 24.700 Euro (Cat. No. 107) while a German bidder won a vermeil lidded tankard, an excellent piece by the Augsburg master Johann Andreas Thelott (1665 – 1734), which sold for 34.500 Euro (Cat. No. 12).
Formerly owned by an Austrian prince, a set of Viennese bowls, once more proved that Viennese Silver enjoys considerable international popularity when a British bidder bought the three items for 22.300 Euro (Cat. No. 251).
