The single best auction of contemporary art in Dorotheum history: Collectors from all over the globe participated in the bidding for the auction's excellent selection on 24th of May 2012.
The highest bid was heard for a scintillating blue wall object by Anish Kapoor, currently one of the most important contemporary artists. Created in 2001, the untitled piece made of stainless steel and paint went to an Austrian bidder for 754.800 Euro. A major work by Agostino Bonalumi, the structured white canvas „Bianco“ employing a clever interplay of light and dark shades, likewise went to an Austrian collector.
All of the top lots were successfully sold to new owners. Testing the top of the estimated price range, an Italian bidder acquired Lucio Fontana's perforated canvas „Concetto spaziale” Attese, dating to 1968, for 583.300 Euro. Italian art celebrated another success in the sale of Afro Basaldella's mixed technique „Torneo“, for 225.800 Euro. Robert Indiana's Self Portrait (€ 282.300) and Andy Warhol's Portrait of Linda Cossey (€ 248.800) underwent significant appreciation during the bidding, as did one of the picture-objects from Ilya Kabakov's series revolving around the fictional artist Charles Rosenthal (€ 306.300).
