Zaha Hadid's light sculpture Vortexx promises to be one of the most colourful highlights of the Dorotheum Vienna's upcoming design auction on 7th May 2007. Based on a joint concept of the architect and Patrik Schumacher, this truly spectacular light sculpture was realised by Zumtobel. When Zaha Hadid talks about her initial vision of an infinite band of light she describes its "charismatically curving contours that resemble a double helix and appear to the viewer as some ceaselessly flowing form – weightless, impulsive, and radiant."Twelve meters in length, the string of light coils itself into a mesmerising array measuring 2 by 1,5 meters. The continuously changing colours – red shifting to yellow, blue, and green – attract our gaze and the sophisticated light management system can be programmed to create an almost infinite number of combinations and moods.Vortexx was originally presented at the Milan Furniture Fair of 2005 by the Italian design company Sawaya & Moroni. In April 2006, the design won the European “Lights of the Future“ design award.
The object has been valued at 100.000 - 150.000 Euro. This particular sculpture was also on display during the recent major Zaha Hadid retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum New York (3rd June – 25th October 2006). To date, only three such sculptures have been produced.
