For the third time running, the Dorotheum Salzburg rises to the occasion of the "Classic Expo" – the international fair of vintage cars held at the Messezentrum Salzburg – to host an auction of oldtimer and youngtimer vintage cars. On 20th and 21st October 2007 the gavel will come down on a wide range of rare and spectacular machines.
One of the earliest examples of automobile art, a De Dion Bouton dates to 1906. As early as 1890, the two Frenchmen Albert de Dion and Georges Bouton developed a single-cylinder, petrol powered engine – an innovation that would eventually be installed in over 40.000 cars. The valuation for this lovingly restored car, most recently housed in it's owners living room, amounts to between 16.000 and 22.000 Euro.
Seemingly forgotten by the world, a Mercedes-Benz 170 H limousine convertible was discovered by Dorotheum experts in a less than perfectly restored state. This rarity was made in 1938, in a production run totalling 2507, of which currently only about 40 cars are thought to still exist. The history of this particular car is difficult to reconstruct beyond the fact that it was registered in the greater Paris area in during the early nineteen-fifties (valuation € 6.000 – 10.000).
Perhaps on account of its handsome profile, the upmarket car maker Jaguar proved highly successful with its 1948 sports car XK 120. The Dorotheum auction now presents the 1954 coupé version with powerful 160 hp (valuation € 50.000 – 55.000).
Peugeot is one of the oldest car makers in continued existence, its factory near Belfort producing motor cars since 1896. In 1956, they made a limousine (Type 203C), that with its 45 hp outpaced the previous 1948 model by a full 3 hp! (valuation € 7.000 – 8.000)
Of course, that nothing compared to the 340 hp of the Ferrari, vintage 1971, awaiting a new sports-car crazy owner. This car is also the Dorotheum's way of contributing to the Classic-Expo's theme, „60 Years Ferrari“ being celebrated with a special exhibition. Only 500 cars of this particular Model 365 GTC/4 were ever produced. With its more luxurious body, offering more room than the GTB/5 and even two auxiliary seats, there's no reason why one shouldn't go for a family outing in one's Ferrari (valuation € 60.000 – 65.000).
The auction includes a total of ca. 40 oldtimer- and youngtimer vintage cars (e.g. Porsche, Ferrari, Lancia, Mercedes, Maserati, BMW), as well as various automobile accessories, such as a „Corvette“ neon sign (valuation € 400 – 500) with a starting price of 1 Euro. The vehicles come from Austria, Germany and even Great Britain, and many of them will be auctioned without upper limit!
