Gilded Autumn - Antiques Auction concludes a successful Auction Week

In the footsteps of Waldmüller & Co, art objects of the Biedermeier Period also scored very high at the Vienna Dorotheum antiques auction on 7th and 8th October 2009.

Pride of place went to a pair of 2,4m tall candelabra, designed by the famous Josef Danhauser and dating to 1805/15. At the end of a heated bidding contest, the seven-light candleholders in gold and black decorated with sculpted female figures, ram- and male heads were sold to a European bidder for 116.200 Euro, three times the estimate (Cat. No. 580). Furniture items were likewise much sought-after, most impressively so in the case of the Bopparder Chair by Thonet, which rose from 1.000 to a final 29.580 Euro (Cat. No. 598)

In the glass and porcelain category, a Johann Josef Mildner cup decorated with the silhouette of a gentleman was sold for a fantastic 24.700 Euro (Cat. No. 856), while in the sculpture category a 15th century Gothic Virgin enjoyed particular popularity (€ 44.200, Cat. No. 758). Almost every single one of the objects in the silver auction was successfully sold – a Spanish cigarette case of 1650 taking the lead (€ 55.200, Cat. No. 652) – and the jewellery auction saw equally intense bidding.

Characterised by great demand and excellent results, the recent auction week at the Dorotheum signals a resoundingly successful start to the autumn season.
