The name „Robj Paris“ is associated with one of France’s most renowned Art Deco ceramics companies and the Dorotheum Vienna is very pleased to include in the selection of its art nouveau auction on 15th March 2010 a number of novel objects made by Robj, namely a collection of liqueur bottles. These highly unusual bottles are in the shape of human figures, with their heads and hats attached to the stopper. The set includes a figure of Napoleon („Fine Napoleon“, valuation € 600 - 700), a potbellied friar, and even one made up of three sailors, „Les trois matelots“ (€ 700 - 800). The porcelain flacons are approximately 25 cm tall with a particularly fine example, a pair of bright yellow liqueur bottles inscribed “Rhum”, in a small and a large version (€ 900-1.000).
Robj Paris was in operation from 1921 to 1931 and employed designers and artists to create Art Deco- and Cuban style designs for the company which then commissioned them to be made, e.g. by Limoges Porcelain. As part of their quest for new designers, Robj also sponsored a competition held annually between 1927 and 1931. The company’s designs featured mainly bookends, ashtrays, lamp bases, small ceramic figures (especially of dancers) as well as the above liqueur flacons.
