From Josef Albers, Giorgio de Chirico, and Josef Hoffmann to Kolo Moser, Zaha Hadid and Victor Vasarely – the stars of international modern and contemporary art, design, art nouveau, silver, watches, and jewellery await art lovers and collectors from around the globe at the major Dorotheum auctions to be held from 17th to 21st May 2010.
19th May 2010
Sand isle full of nails – Contemporary Art
Ranging from the geometrical-constructive approach of Agostino Bonalumi and Josef Albers, to the gestural and wild technique of Herbert Brandl and Emilio Vedova, to the material and experimental work of Günther Uecker and Louise Nevelson - no other genre is characterised by as many different styles and methods as is the one commonly subsumed under the heading "contemporary art". Anything goes. Collectors and lovers of current art will also find this to be the case when able to choose their favourite from a wide range of styles at the Dorotheum auction on 19th May 2010
Coinciding with the artist's 80th birthday, the auction features two works by Günther Uecker, a protagonist of the ZERO Group, who during the nineteen-sixties proclaimed a fresh start for art: his Sand Isle, exhibited at the 1970 Venice Biennial („Sandinsel“,1970, € 170.000 - 220.000), and Gate to the Exhibition, which Uecker installed on the premises of the „Symbol“ magazine in 1983, on the occasion of the „kölnisch-klause-(phobien)" exhibition („Tor zur Ausstellung“, € 140.000 - 180.000). Uecker's nailing technique has much in common with certain elements of Op Art.
ZERO also exerted its influence on Agostino Bonalumi, whose work uses light and shade in monochrome canvases extended into the third dimension, as for example in „Nero“ dating to 1966 (€ 50.000 - 70.000).
Aside from first-rate works of contemporary Italian art, the auction also features striking works by renowned German artists, such as a technically interesting painted-over photograph by Anselm Kiefer („Les femmes de l’antiquité“, € 90.000 - 120.000) or a three-dimensional painting sculpture „Drei Dinge“, 2004, by a rising star, Thomas Scheibitz (€ 18.000 - 22.000).
Austrian contemporary art, represented by artists such as Otto Muehl, Erwin Wurm, Peter Kogler and Eva Schlegel, catches the eye with giant canvases by Herbert Brandl (2004,
€ 32.000 - 38.000; 2009, € 45.000 - 55.000), a 1952 „Konstruktion TRR“ by Arnulf Rainer
(€ 120.000 - 160.000) and two abstract "Head" objects by the recently deceased artist Bruno Gironcoli (each € 20.000 - 28.000).
20th May 2010
War of the Titans – Modern Art
An impressive selection of Modern Art at the auction on 20th May 2010 features radical works by Max Liebermann („Spielende Kinder“, € 90.000 - 120.000) and Paula Modersohn-Becker („Sitzendes Mädchen mit Strohhut und Kind auf dem Schoß“, 1904, € 170.000 - 220.000) as well as a Woman with Veil by Carry Hauser ("Frau mit Schleier" 1929, € 28.000 - 35.000) and Lilies by Gabriele Münter that seem almost hyper-real in their cool and dispassionate rendition („Lilien“ 1940, € 90.000 - 140.000). This is also true of Tamara de Lempicka's rather atypical „Chambre d’hotel“ of 1951, one of her masterpieces (€ 120.000 - 180.000).
Koloman Moser' dramatic War of the Titans („Kampf der Titanen" € 260.000 - 320.000) shares the limelight with works by Artur Nikodem, Sergius Pauser, and Werner Berg. A monograph by Maria Rennhofer has this to say about the more than two meter long Moser painting: works such as this "demonstrate the pronounced influence of Ferdinand Hodler, in the pathos of their subject, the heroic idealisation, the mostly symmetrical composition, the magic use of lighting, and in their monumental expansiveness."
Once again, the auction also shines with a number of superior works by Italian artists such as Giorgio de Chirico – with a view of Venice - Giacomo Manzù and Filippo de Pisis. One of the highlights is a 1935 Paesaggio (landscape) by Giorgio Morandi (€ 330.000 - 380.000). International stars include Fernand Leger, Maurice Utrillo or Henry Moore, to name just a few.
17th – 21st May 2010
Highlights of Design, Silver, Art Nouveau, Jewellery and Watches
With its extensive selection of Design at the auction 18th May 2010, Dorotheum underlines its strong position in the international design market. Ranging from a Prouvé table (€ 40.000 - 50.000) and Luigi Colani's VW-Beetle-1200 body, to Diego Giacometti's writing desk
(€ 150.000 - 180.000), and Ron Arad's Mercedes Benz Chairs (set of 8, € 12.000 - 14.000), the auction's selection includes a particularly fine choice of contemporary design, from Grawunder to Rehberger. The auction's highlight will, quite literally, be Zaha Hadid's VorteXX Chandelier scintillating in multi-coloured splendour (€ 110.000 - 130.000).
The auction's range of contemporary design from Israel is probably singular (cat. no. 9 - 18). Pini Leibovich lends computer-generated organic form to bookshelf, vase, and table, while the Reddish Design team creates a menorah, a nine-light candleholder, by lining up nine different-sized historical candleholders in a horizontal line (unique item, 2008, € 2.800 - 3.400).
Stools, a multifunctional piece of furniture somewhere between a seat, small side table, or even shelf, also come in a diversity of forms at this auction: Reddish Design shapes one from polystyrene, Verner Panton of red lacquered wood, while a design group from Graz uses bent eternit (BLOF, € 1.000 - 1.500). Eero Aarino had a pair of stools woven from rattan in 1962, while in 1930, Josef Frank preferred curved wood, similar to Adolf Loos, who gave his stool three legs (€ 4.000 - 5.000).
Pride of place at the Silver auction on 17th May 2010 will go to a service of the Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great € 70.000 - 90.000), a 'Virgin' cup from Augsburg dating to the period around 1685 (€ 10.000 - 16.000), or perhaps a lidded niello tankard from Hamburg (€ 25.000 - 28.000).
Art Nouveau on 20th May 2010 offers an extensive and extremely rare coffee- and tea service by Otto Prutscher (€ 50.000 - 70.000), four equally rare girandoles by the famous silver smith Georg Jensen (€ 30.000 - 40.000), as well as vases created by Franz Hofstötter for Lötz on the occasion of a World Fair. One 24 cm tall vase by Gallé (circa 1906/14, € 13.000 - 14.000) is decorated with a kingfisher and flying insects while a 13 cm long Wiener Werkstätte lidded silver box by Dagobert Peche shows leafy tendrils and fruit (€ 6.000 - 9.000).
Wrist- and Pocket Watches will come up for auction on 21st May 2010. Awaiting a new owner are a beautiful unostentatious egg-shaped Art Déco table clock of rose quartz and onyx by Cartier (€ 16.000 - 24.000), a Breitling Navitimer with numerous functions (€ 15.000 - 24.000), and a simple and elegant LeCoultre Memovox Polaris stainless steel gentleman's wrist-watch (ca. 1965, € 5.000 - 8.000). Considered a masterpiece of watch making, a Jaeger LeCoultre gentleman's wristwatch is distinguished by the unusual combination of perpetual calendar and alarm function (€ 10.000 - 16.000). On 19th May jewellery shines with, among other treasures, an opulent tourmaline jewellery set (€ 45.000 - 55.000).
