A selection of 56 textile patterns
of the "Wiener Werkstätte", circa 1920/25,
estimate € 600 – 700
The Dorotheum art nouveau auction on 16th September 2010 revolves around two special themes, textile patterns and works in leather by the "Wiener Werkstätte" (Vienna Workshops).
The 56 textile patterns from 1920/25 are distinguished by their classic character and timeless elegance, appealing not only to the dedicated art nouveau collector but also to the discerning fashion victim. Silk- and leather works of exceptional quality catch one's eye with bold colours and extravagant patterns (€ 600 – 700).
Franz Hollmann (1878-1967) worked at the "Wiener Werkstätte" as a leather craftsman from 1910 to 1925. His contribution to this auction not only includes his publication „Technologie für Ledergalanteriearbeiter“ (Techniques of the Leather Craftsman, € 200 – 250), but also a number of prime examples of his skill such as small bags, covers, or even a travel chess set made of leather (€ 300 – 350). A small notebook cover of black leather with embossed gilt edging is by Dagobert Peche (€ 400 – 500), a cylindrical WW-yarn case by Josef Hoffmann (€ 500 – 600), and another notebook cover with gold WW-signature by Otto Prutscher (€ 800 – 1.200).
As always, the selection of the art nouveau auction also encompasses furniture, works in bronze, silver, ceramic, and glass, e. g. by Thonet, Emile Gallé, Lötz Veuve.
