Sugarloaf Mountain and Top Prices - High Appreciation for 19th Century Painting at the Dorotheum

Highlights of Italian salon painting became the focus of interest at the Auction of 19th Century Painting on 16th April 2008 at the Dorotheum Vienna.

The ladies presented at the auction showed themselves in a most favourable light: Giovanni Boldini's bold portrait of the eccentric actress Alice Regnault, an old flame of Alexandre Dumas’ son, found a new lover from Italy for almost  € 400.000 (Cat. No. 415). The elegance and French flair of the two ladies depicted in Vittorio Matteo Corcos' „ Conversation in the Jardin du Luxembourg“ proved equally irresistible; the painting was successfully sold for € 191.300 (Cat. No. 417)

Following heated bidding, Nicolau Antonio Facchinetti's „View of the Gulf of Rio“, 1872, this city view, with an extensive description on its back, was acquired by a French telephone bidder. The rareness of the motif – which shows the famous Sugarloaf Mountain from an unusual perspective – and the fact that the artist is particularly sought-after in Brazil resulted in a sensational price appreciation from an estimated € 28.000 to a final € 283.300 (Cat. No. 411).

A similar increase in value occurred at the sale of a painting by the Polish-born artist Henryk Siemiradzki, educated in St Petersburg and Munich and renowned for his scenes in the manner of antiquity; his „Water bearer in an antique landscape with olive trees" tripled in price and was sold via telephone to a bidder in Poland for € 134.000 (Cat. No. 447).

Celebrated proponents of 19th century Austrian painting also had a field day: Friedrich Gauermann's „Flock, shepherd, and peasant girl by the lake shore" changed hands for € 97.900 (Cat. No. 464), while Franz Xaver Petter' „Large Still Life of Alpine flowers“ was knocked down far above expectations for € 66.300 (Cat. No. 466). Two paintings by Olga Wisinger-Florian, a „Farm garden in spring“ and „Pansies“, will soon blossom in Russia (€ 57.600, € 85.700, Cat. No. 527 und 530).

In short, the Dorotheum had every reason to be pleased with what proved to be an exciting auction with significant price gains. On 17th April. the auction week at the splendid Dorotheum Palais will continue with the Antiques Auction.
