Tradition, our specialists’ expertise and market experience, personal service, a broad selection, and international outlook – this is what our clients appreciate about the Dorotheum.
300 years after its foundation, the Dorotheum, established in 1707, is the largest auction house in Central Europe and in the German-speaking area, as well as one of the leading auctioneers worldwide.
The Dorotheum hosts about 600 auctions a year, and more than 100 specialists attend to over 40 departments.
2007 was a truly superlative year for the Dorotheum.
In the three-hundredth year since the foundation of one of the world's oldest and largest auction houses, the Dorotheum's tercentenary auctions were rewarded by excellent sales and world record results. The total turnover of € 123 million exceeded the earlier record of the previous year by more that € 30 million.
More and more international
In general, the Dorotheum increasingly attracts international bidders and buyers to its auctions, in particular clients from Italy, Switzerland, and Great Britain. It is also interesting to note that many Russian customers seem mainly inclined to 'buy back' objects originally coming from Russia. This tendency is particularly pronounced in the medal category, but also applies to porcelain, 19th century painting, and silver.
The Dorotheum offers a great variety of categories with particular emphasis on the major sectors of art, such as Old Masters, 19th-century painting, modern and contemporary art, as well as various types of antiques, including glass, porcelain, Art Nouveau, silver, sculpture, furniture, design, frames, jewellery, and watches. A number of specialised departments complement the Dorotheum’s auction programme; they are devoted to several types of traditional and more recent collectibles: books, coins, autographs, stamps, medals, historical securities, militaria and historical weapons, toys, model railways, vintage commercial art, comics, vintage radio technology, vintage cameras, and vintage motor vehicles.
The auction year revolves around four big international auction weeks.
The presentation of the items offered for sale in more than 100 special catalogues per year and a large international clientele ensure worldwide attention.
The top lots to be sold at auction are also presented in our international representative offices in Brussels, Munich, Düsseldorf, and Milan.
