Schönbrunn and Lipizzaner
Fourth Kumpf Edition for the Dorotheum Gallery – Exhibition at Vienna’s Palais Dorotheum – For Sale in Austria as of 9 November 2007.
Dorotheum and Kumpf, fourth round: A new edition of bronze figures by Gottfried Kumpf for the Dorotheum Gallery – the fourth so far – will by available all over Austria as of 9 November 2007.
The fourth Kumpf Edition, produced exclusively for the Dorotheum Gallery, comprises four small sculptures and once again shows the typical stylistic features cherished by Kumpf lovers. This time, the animal-loving artist was primarily inspired by the orang-utans in the zoo of Schönbrunn. Orang-Utan Family was modelled after the monkeys Nonja and Vladimir; the sculpture, which appears in a very small and thus particularly exclusive edition of 49, weighs as much as 6.3 kilos (€ 2,900). The edition also includes a small orang-utan baby (edition: 149, € 990). Another figure was devoted to the Lipizzaner horses, one of Austria’s landmarks: Kumpf has represented a horse in the levade, a manoeuvre of classic dressage in which the animal rears on its hind legs and keeps its front legs drawn close to the body (edition: 149, € 1,900). A characteristic motif of Kumpf’s, which also occurs in his paintings, is the tightly embracing and pleasantly chubby peasant couple called Lovers (edition: 99, € 990).
Gottfried Kumpf was born in Salzburg in 1930 and has been living in Vienna and in Breitenbrunn on Lake Neusiedl in the Burgenland since 1968. In 1974 he created his first bronze figure, the Unsocial, today a well-known motif and Kumpf idol. For further information on the artist and his oeuvre see www.kumpf.at
