World records for Scheggi and Fontana at Dorotheum
Our evening auction on 20th May started with a world record for the first lot at Dorotheum: "Zone riflesse " by Paolo Scheggi scored a sensational 573 300 Euros - by far the highest price ever achieved at auction for a work by this artist. Scheggi, an artist in the circle of Castellani, Bonalumi and Fontana in Milan in the 1960s, imagined his paintings as three-dimensional objects. His " Zone Rilesse " creates depth through several layers of planes.
Lucio Fontana's " Concetto spaziale " (100 x 81 cm ) from 1957 achieved with 1.08 million Euros the world record price for a "baroque yellow and black with glitter" picture of the artist. The baroque inspired Fontana with its expansive dynamics : “Where the plastic form is inseparable from the notion of time, here the images appear to abandon the plane and continue the movements they suggest in space.”
The excellent auction of Contemporary Art at Dorotheum on 20th and 21st May was the most successful in the history of the auction house, with numerous top results and exciting bidding competition.
Sean Scully’s large painting " Lucia " went to a bidder for 934 230 Euros. Ilya Kabakov's conceptual painting "Girl with scales, 1972" achieved outstanding 366 300 Euros, Günter Förg’s untitled lead image achieved 126 830 Euros . The Austrian Art section scored with works from Max Weiler , a fitting piece by Franz West , as well as a large-scale mountain panorama from Herbert Brandl. Also other Italian highlights from the auction reached record prices, such as Enrico Castellani , Agostino Bonalumi and Dadamaino.
