Mask made of hard, heavy wood, coloured black, the eyes, ears, teeth and nostrils white (kaolin). The dancers of individual dance societies wear these heavy masks on their heads. The dancer looks out under the rim of the mask through a cloth or net of the mask costume. This Cameroon Grassfields mask is an exceptionally well-crafted, old piece. With coiffure, carved beard and an excellent, old usage patina (inside!). 19th/early 20th century. H: 39 cm. (ME)
