The matyrdom theme of the present drawing reappears in several Venetian drawings of the 18th century; an immediate iconographic model has not yet been identified. The saint is traditionally depicted as a woman and sems related to painting “The Matyrdom of Saint Justina” for the high altar piece of the church with the same name in Padova by Paolo Veronese, which was reproduced in an etching by Agostino Carracci. (comp. Diane deGrazia Bohlin 1979, p. 105). The saint in the present drawing is, however, depicted as a young man. A similar transfer of the theme can be found in the drawing "Matyrdom of St. Paul" by Domenico Tiepolo mit dem (comp. Gealt & Knox 2006, p. 297), whose composition seems to be based on Lodovico Carraccis "Matyrdom of Saint Margarete" in San Maurizio, Mantova.
