Anna Dorothea Therbusch-Lisiewska (Berlin 1721 - 1782)
Lady in yellow and blue, with a basket of flowers, oil on canvas, 87.5 x 73 cm, old gilded frame, (Wo)
In this vivid and masterfully executed portrait of this charming young lady, Anna Dorothea Therbusch captured the sitter’s restrained, enchanting smile. In 1761 Therbusch received a call to the court of Duke Charles Eugene in Stuttgart, where she did paintings for the palace’s hall of mirrors, as well as several mythological scenes and portraits. In 1763 she went to Mannheim, where she became a court painter, executing several likenesses of Elector Charles Theodor. In 1764 she returned to Berlin, doing mythological subjects (commissioned by Duke Charles Eugene) and portraits. In 1765 Terbusch went to Paris, where she became a member of the Académie Royale in 1767. She qualified for her membership with a masterful portrait of Philipp Hackert, which she painted in Paris in 1768. In 1769/70 she went back to Berlin, where she executed commissions for Frederick the Great, as well as numerous portraits of members of the court and the aristocracy, patricians, and members of the Prussian royal family. Terbusch’s relevance as an artist lies in portraiture. Her realistic likenesses of members of the bourgeoisie are excellent and far advanced for her time, but also her large official portraits show outstanding achievements in terms of colour and composition. Numerous portraits by her hand are preserved at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
