Lombard School of the late 17th century
Portrait of a beggar, oil on canvas, 76 x 100 cm, unframed, (Wo)
Provenance: European private collection
The present painting belongs to a group of works first examples of which appeared in Bergamo and Brescia towards the late 16th century. The most important painters of this direction were Moretto and Savoldo, as well as - at the beginning of the following century - Caravaggio and finally Ceruti, called Il Pitocchetto. Formal simplicity and the conscious selection of motifs that did not conform with the ideal of beauty - such as beggars, vagabonds, and pilgrims - were characteristic features of this movement of realism.
